Surviving a Car Accident

There was a car bursting into flames in Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) headed for Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) on January 3, 2014. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) contained the situation. The force successfully pulled two people (a man and woman in their twenties) from the car. They were immediately sent to the National University Hospital (NUH) for treatment. They only sustained body pains and some abrasions.

As much as possible you do not want to endure a car accident. But if this happens, it is better if you are knowledgeable so you can survive. Here are some methods you can consider to survive a car accident:

  1. Wear Your Seat Belt All the Time. You are always reminded to always wear your seat belt. Seat belts are your first line of defence should there be a crash. Do not disregard or ignore it.
  2. Use Other Safety Features of the Car. Apart from the seat belt, you have to consider other safety features of the car. You have to make sure that the airbag is in good conditions.
  3. Make Sure the Car is in Good Condition. You have to bring your car to the mechanic every now and then to check if the suspension, tires, transmissions, engines and breaks are in good condition.
  4. Drive Safely. You have to observe safety driving practices like obeying the traffic, slowing down when approaching a pedestrian and many more.
  5. When Caught in an Accident, Stay Calm. If crash or accident is inevitable, you have to stay calm and do not panic. Panicking will not do you good. It will only cloud your judgment.
  6. Minimize the Damage. Since it is inevitable, you should do your best to minimize the damage. You have to think when to use the accelerator or break. You have to limit the accident as much as possible.
  7. Switch Off the Engine. When you crashed or collided, you have to switch off the engine right away. Do not try to smoke because your car might burst into flames.
  8. Call the Police or Emergency Team. If your body is in a compromising situation, you have to call the police and wait for the ambulance and the team to extract you. Do not try to move because it will only make things worse.

There you go. Accidents can be avoided but sometimes, no matter how cautious and careful you are, you will never know what lies ahead. The best thing to do is brace yourself if ever you experience this. You have to spread the things that you just learned so many people will know what to do when they are in this situation. Happy driving! Eyes on the road and you will be just fine.
