Types of Sports for Kids

Sports are different from games. Games are for amusement and enjoyment while sports are for teaching children sportsmanship, team work, and enhance physical and strategic skills. Furthermore, it teaches children to do things on their own and be responsible of their own moves and decisions.

Team Sports

Team sports are sports played by two opposing teams. One of the most popular sports of this kind is basketball. Basketball is a fast moving team sport that is very popular to youths ages 13 to 18. Another popular team sport is ice hockey. This sport can now be played anytime of the year because of the indoor ice arenas made for the convenience of hockey enthusiasts.

Individual Sports

Bicycling has always been one of the best sports people enjoy, including children. Tennis and golf are also great sports to develop children’s confidence and motor skills, while gymnastics help improve endurance and body coordination. Martial arts and taekwondo are also good individual sports that teach children mental and physical control.

Extreme Sports

For kids who are into thrill and excitement can have extreme sports. This type of sport lures youngsters who feel pressure in following team rules. Extreme sports can be an alternative in developing persistence, strength, discipline and technical abilities. Some of these sports are snowboarding, which is now one of the winter Olympics sports, skateboarding, BMX, mountain biking, and in-line skating.
